Apart from some mis-aligned interior trim (the double-stitching on the dash didn’t line up with the door trim), interior materials are superb and on the road the Jag feels as solid as a bank vault. Luxurious, powerful and beautiful to look at, this is exactly what a world-class automobile should be. Overall, our Jaguar XF sedan is impressive. Once you’re in the back seat it’s very comfortable, and rear seating is preferred especially if you desire the VIP treatment. The Jag’s steep roofline and smallish opening between the B-pillar and rear seat makes getting in and out of the back awkward, and rear seat legroom is only average. While accommodations for front passengers are superb, the rear cabin misses a best-in-class rating. At elevated speeds, only the slightest hum from the tires can be detected (likely due to the winter tires fitted on our test unit) and the car’s aerodynamics seems honed to near perfection. The Jag is quieter, isolates passengers from road imperfections, and has a suppler ride than the Mercedes E-Class we tested recently. It’s an amusing display, but perhaps a bit too ‘Batmobile putting up its armour against the rioting hoards’-gimmicky for me.īut once rolling, the Jaguar XF is a tour de force of luxury automobile finery, cosseting its occupants. Turn the engine off and gearshift post retreats into the console and the air vents rotate back to show a solid cover again. Start the Jaguar via a dash-mounted button and you’re greeted with a mini show – the four dashboard air vents rotate their flat faceplates to reveal adjustable vanes, and a knurled aluminum post (the gear selector) rises from the console. The 32-valve DOHC naturally aspirated V-eight engine puts out an impressive 385 horsepower, but more importantly the engine is creamy smooth and accelerates the two-tonne plus car with a healthy V-eight growl and vigour that should satisfy most enthusiast drivers. The XF Portfolio sedan comes with the myriad of features one expects in a premium luxury sedan, but perhaps the jewel of the Jaguar’s XF package is its gorgeous 5.0-litre V-eight engine.

Her eyes glaze over and she makes a wry little smile it’s the same reaction she has to a young Brad Pitt strutting around shirtless in the movie Thelma & Louise. “What do you think of this new Jaguar?”, I ask, after she settles for the first time into the plush leather seat in our Polaris White saloon – er, sedan. Burled wood is sadly absent (but available), but our demo car’s gorgeous perforated ivory leather interior caused an unexpected reaction in my wife Ingrid, who typically responds to new cars with the same enthusiasm people have when eating white bread. Textured aluminum and piano black trim adorns the main hard surfaces. Inside the XF sedan is a model of contemporary style. Large taillights extend onto the trunk, and a slim spoiler and a pair of stainless steel oval exhaust tips add a purposeful, performance touch.

In side view, a steeply raked roofline, chrome trim around the windows and a character line above the rocker panels give the Jag a sleek, stylish profile. Cat eye-shaped headlights, a trapezoidal grille and a trio of air intakes gives the XF sedan a distinctly Jaguar ‘face’. Despite having been introduced in 2008, the XF’s coachwork still looks fresh and elegant. This luxury rear-wheel-drive sedan competes with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E550, BMW 540i and Audi A6. Our 2012 XF Portfolio sedan is a fine example of what now Jaguar builds. The legendary British marque, it seems, come with a sense of regal elegance, something the German, American and Asian manufacturers lack. Jaguar offers a very different ownership experience from the main competition. Just thinking about “Jaguar” cars and you can almost catch a lingering whiff of sherry infused pipe tobacco. Jaguar is an iconic luxury marque that evokes images of Old World finery – timeless style, powerful engines and interiors crafted with rich leather and burled walnut.
